EuroDov Cup - Baxter brings home the cup
EuroDov Tour
Saturday 16 March 2019
2019 saw the EuroDov Cup remain on the Iberian peninsula at Quinta da Marinha, Portugal.
The 2019 Cup saw a reduced field of just three players with John Hedges joining defending champion David McColgan alongside EuroDov Cup rookie Greig Baxter.
For the first time the players played 54 holes over the three days, 18 holes each day. The course at Quinta da Marinha presented the players with a significant challenge that rewarded strategy and shot making in equal measure. The 6419 yard, Robert Trent Jones designed course, wedged between the Atlantic Ocean and Sintra Mountains was a fitting backdrop for what turned out to be a highly competitive tournament.
Day one was an understandably nervous affair, all three players were new to the course and like 2018 required time to get settled in and around the green complexes.
After 9 holes the players were well placed with McColgan leading on 44, Hedges on 45, and Baxter on 48. However as the round moved on Baxter settled into the course and carded 4 pars in the first 5 holes on the back nine. McColgan was going strong in the back nine but faltered through the middle holes, especially up 16 which was a long iron pulled out of bounds.
Day one finished with a very tight leader board that saw McColgan lead Baxter by 1 with Hedges one shot further behind.
Day two saw the players take to the course with learnings from round 1 but saw all three falter on the first with McColgan carding a 6 and Baxter and Hedges both carding 8's. McColgan and Baxter steadied the ship quicker than Hedges and with McColgan carding 5 pars on the front 9.
Baxter however would go on to card 5 par's on the back nine with McColgan only managing 2. Hedges picked up on the back nine to card 50 in response to his 56 on the front nine. Baxter's strong showing on the back nine put pressure on McColgan and saw McColgan put his second into the water on 18 on the way to carding a bogey.
At the end of day two Baxter had over turned McColgan's lead and now had a 1 shot lead over McColgan with Hedges 5 shots further off the lead.
Day three was all set-up to be a great final round with all three players within striking distance. The first hole saw Baxter and McColgan match each other with pars and Hedges carding a triple-bogey 8. The second hole, and second hardest on the course saw the first move in the leader board has McColgan delivered a 9 iron from 159 yards to 3 feet.
He would go on to sink the birdie putt whilst Baxter only managed a bogey. On the third hole McColgan only managed a bogey 5, but a lost ball for Baxter saw him card a triple bogey.
McColgan carded his best front nine of the tournament with a 3 over 39 but Baxter carded a 2 over 38 to increase his lead by 1 shot, Hedges struggled to card a 50.
At the turn McColgan struggled on the Par 3 10th after an awkward bunker shot and carded a double bogey as Baxter sunk his putt for 3. McColgan however would gain 3 strokes with pars on 11 and 12 and Baxter would get one back on the par 3 13th.
Walking on to the 14 tee Baxter and McColgan were tied on the leaderboard. Baxter dispatched his tee shot on to the fairway over the water. McColgan, who had hit the fairway the first two rounds, inexplicably struck his tee shot into the pond 100 yards in front. Baxter would go on to capitalise and increase his lead. McColgan struck back with two pars on the par 3 15th and 17th but the damage had been done and Baxter would hold on to win the 2019 EuroDov Cup.
