After an 18 month break the EuroDov Cup returned in 2021. The Tour took the decision due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic to hold the event for the first time ever in the UK. It was an event of first with the largest ever field, 8 players, and it was also the first time in the EuroDov Cup’s history that we had a wire-to-wire winner.
The 2021 tournament featured past EuroDov Cup winner, David McColgan, three players making their second appearance in the tournament, Stephen Green, Andy Love and Denis Duncan and four players making their first appearance Jim Robertson, Stuart Allan, William McColgan and David Hutcheson.
The Tour made the decision in the summer of 2021 that the 2022 edition would remain in the UK and announced the host venue as The Mere resort in Manchester. Speaking to Tour Secretary, David McColgan, he said, “the success of the 2021 edition of the EuroDov Cup encouraged the Tour to stay in the UK and keep the event running. Of course, being held in the UK means risking UK weather, and we saw that in 2021 with rain and even thunder and lightning, but the field and the Tour managed to successfully stage the 54-hole tournament.”
The deadline for declaring for the 2022 edition has closed and the Tour are delighted that once again the field has expanded for the second Major of the year. A total of 10 players have declared for 2022, so let’s meet them now;
David McColgan – McColgan returns for his fourth EuroDov Cup. He is the only player to have played in all four editions and boast two wins, to go alongside his other five Major wins.
McColgan excels in the 54-hole format and showed his ability to work a ball around a tough course when needed.
Stuart Allan – Allan finished second in his first appearance in the EuroDov Cup in 2021. He held the 36-hole lead alongside McColgan and Duncan but faded away in the final round.
Allan will be looking to learn from his first outing in the EuroDov Cup as aims to lift his first EuroDov Tour Major.
Denis Duncan – Duncan made his second appearance in the EuroDov Cup in 2021 and held the 36-hole lead at one point. He struggled in windy and wet conditions in the final round but was very much in the hunt for a lot of the tournament.
Duncan’s experience over the 54 holes and his growing comfort in competition golf will put him in good stead for 2022.
Andy Love – Love scooped his first Major at the end of the 2021 season and he’ll be looking at the EuroDov Cup as a potential second. He makes his third appearance in 2022.
Love has proven his ability to win out over 18 holes and will be looking to build the consistency to support competing over 54.
Jim Robertson – Robertson made his debut in the EuroDov Cup in 2021. After the first nine holes of the third round Love, Green and Robertson provided the story of the tournament in their battle for 4th place.
Robertson’s game is steady and accurate, and he can’t be ruled out of any tournament.
Stephen Green – Green made his second appearance at Slaley Hall and he’ll be looking to place better than in 2022. A third-place finish in the season long Order of Merit will give him a boost going into 2022.
Green’s biggest challenge will be stringing together his consistency over 54 holes.
William McColgan – McColgan Snr. made his first appearance in the EuroDov Cup in 2021. He enjoyed spells of good golf but fell of the lead in the end.
McColgan is a steady golfer and will be looking to string together a few good rounds to put him in contention in 2022.
David Hutcheson – A very accurate golfer, Hutcheson didn’t have his best outing in 2021. His debut appearance wasn’t his finest and he’ll be looking to fly under the radar in 2022.
Hutcheson’s strength lies in accuracy and on the green and he’ll hope to use the combination to lift the Cup.
Greg Baxter – Baxter didn’t play in 2021 but returns in 2022 with the knowledge that he won out over this format in 2019.
Baxter has more than enough talent to lift his second Major and what a return that would be.
Kevin Brannan – Brannan makes his debut in the 2022 EuroDov Cup. A fifth-place finish in the Order of Merit was lower than he hoped by the experience he built over 2021 will stand him in good stead.
Brannan can’t be ruled out, and if anyone does it’s at their peril.
Well there we have it, the largest field ever in the EuroDov Tour consisting of the eight players who played in 2021 plus 2019 EuroDov Cup winner, Greig Baxter, and Kevin Brannan. Reflecting on the field, David McColgan said, “it’s great to retain the field from 2021 and the addition of Baxter and Brannan will only strengthen the competition.
Baxter showed his class in the format in 2019 with a strong victory in Quinta da Marinha and Brannan is a player who is always on the cusp of challenging on Tour.”
The field features three Major winners, four players who qualified for The Invitational tournament, the top three players from the 2021 Order of Merit and the reigning Captain and Vice-Captain from the RyDov Cup.
