Following the conclusion of the season’s first Major, The Invitational Tournament, the EuroDov Tour head straight back into Major mayhem as the EuroDov Tour kicks off on Sunday May 22nd.
The EuroDov Tour is a 56-hole strokeplay tournament traditionally held on the continent. Following the cancellation of the 2020 tournament and the subsequent hosting of the event in the UK in 2021, the Tour decided to remain closer to home for 2022.
The 2022, and fourth playing of the EuroDov Cup will take place at The Mere, Cheshire. The 18 hole, 6,882 -yard, par-71 course at The Mere was designed by James Braid, and created out of 150 acres of Cheshire parkland in 1934. Today, the Championship course holds the reputation as one of the best maintained and highest quality golf courses in the North of England.
Surrounded by mature trees, flowering banks and with stunning views over the Mere Lake, the course offers the charm of the Cheshire countryside, coupled with a range of challenging features to test your precision and driving skills! Water, ravines and thick vegetation have been incorporated into the landscape, demanding care and accuracy whilst navigating the course.
A 9-player field declared for the 2022 event and here is EuroDov Reporters run down of their chances;
David McColgan
Odds: 3/1
Notes: McColgan has won 7 majors in his 9 years on Tour and has a further 5 Tour events to his name. He is the undisputed #1 player on Tour. However, McColgan was humbled in the Invitational after being beaten into 2nd place by Andy Love.
He, self admittedly, did not play well on the day and will be looking to improve his game ahead of the EuroDov Tour. McColgan has his name on the trophy two times already and will be determined to bounce back with a win.
Stuart Allan
Odds: 5/1
Notes: Allan has recorded a 2nd, 5th and 7th place finish already this season and is trending in the right direction.
His game has been developing well and he might have just timed his season to peak perfectly for his first Major. If Allan can master his tee shot around this course he could be unstoppable.
Denis Duncan, Kevin Brannan & Paul Gowens
Odds: 6/1
Notes: These pair finished 4th and 5th respectively in the Invitational but more importantly carded the joint best scores in the afternoon round.
They can take a lot of heart from that, and some fine tuning here and there could deliver a maiden Major.
Gowens stormed to a maiden victory on Tour at the MCM @ Aberdour, and if he returns a round like that at the EuroDov he may find himself so far out in front that the others can’t get near.
He’ll be tested in his maiden Major to see if it was a miracle at the MCM or business as usual.
Jim Robertson & Stephen Green
Odds: 7/1
Notes: The former led The Invitational by a shot after 18 holes but slipped away in the afternoon round. The 56 hole format may be daunting but given it is 1 round a day, he could have enough time to recuperate.
Green makes his 2022 debut on Tour after a relocation forced a scale-back of his commitments. He’ll want to make a good account of himself, but a lack of time on the course could cost him dearly.
William McColgan and David Hutcheson
Odds: 9/1
Notes: The Kinross pair aren’t here to make up the numbers and the tight fairways and tree lined course might make them feel at home. Both players were in contention after round 1 in 2021 but slipped away in the rain soaked second round.
If they can string a couple of rounds together, they might turn a few heads come the final day.
