Tuesday 29 June 2021
After a two year wait the EuroDov Tour is delighted that the EuroDov Cup returns to the Tour’s schedule. The 2021 edition of the EuroDov Cup will be held, for the first time, in the UK at Slaley Hall, Northumberland.
2021 sees the largest field in the history of the EuroDov Cup with 8 players taking on the 54 strokeplay competition over the Hunting and Priestman Courses.
The Hunting course is a big layout measuring in excess of 7,000 yards from the championship tees, with holes carved through a dense pin forest and others routed through more open moorland. Rhododendrons and Cherry trees provide welcome seasonal colour, but it is the pines that will punish the wayward shot, for they and the water features are predominant hazards throughout the round.
The newer Priestman Course has a more open feel to it and conjures up its own array of golfing challenges. The expansive and rangy layout will accommodate big-hitters and strategists alike. Several water hazards and plenty of good bunkering will need to be carefully negotiated, while the generally good-width fairways should inspire confidence from the tee. From the Priestman course you will enjoy expansive views over the stunning Northumberland countryside.
The 2021 field is stacked with EuroDov Tour talent, the 2018 EuroDov Cup winner, four-time Montgomery Cup winner and 2021 St Andrews Open winner, David McColgan heads up the field which includes the other three Order of Merit tournament winners in 2021, Stuart Allan, Stephen Green and Andy Love. Denis Duncan, leader of the overall Order of Merit standings, returns for his second EuroDov Cup. The field also features three players making their EuroDov Cup debuts headed up by the 2020 Bruce Cup winner, William McColgan, alongside David Hutcheson and Jim Robertson.
With the most exciting field in EuroDov Cup history lets take a look at EuroDov Reporters prediction for the weekend;
David McColgan
Odds: 2/1
Notes: McColgan’s pedigree on Tour is unparalleled and there is no one on Tour with his consistency and ability to pick their way around courses, a combination that could serve him well in the EuroDov Cup.
Denis Duncan
Odds: 4/1
Notes: Duncan has been Mr Consistent in the 2021 Order of Merit with four straight second place finishes. If he can translate that form into the condensed three-day format, he might not be far off at the end of the day. Duncan’s downfall may be in the length of his game, but accuracy might help overcome this over the life of the competition.
Stuart Allan
Odds: 5/1
Notes: Allan is undoubtedly one of the power players on Tour. He has the ability to dismantle courses with his power, however accuracy is key around these layouts and shots from the fairway will reward players greater than those from elsewhere on the course.
David Hutcheson
Odds: 5/1
Notes: Hutcheson has the potential to not even feature on most people’s radars. But his accuracy will serve him well around the Hunting and Priestman and he could sneak one here with others even realising.
Andy Love
Odds: 5/1
Notes: Love’s win in the King’s Cup was phenomenal, his mastery of the course was undeniable. However, the length of the courses at Slaley Hall may ask too much of him here and find him relying on a shake short game. But have no doubt Love will be there or there abouts at the end of the day.
Stephen Green
Odds: 6/1
Notes: For many Green won the Mearns Castle Memorial on the 17th and 18th holes in May, but the reality is that he played a steady game throughout the full round at a time when the Tour didn’t watch him too closely. Let’s be clear, the whole field will keep a look at his scores in the EuroDov Cup and he might just be the one standing at the top come Sunday.
Jim Robertson
Odds: 7/1
Notes: Robertson is new t the Tour, but he is a steady player. His game is strong, but not long, from tee to green and his putting is consistent. Robertson quietly goes about his work during a round putting together a good card and he could surprise the field over the 54 holes.
William McColgan
Odds: 7/1
Notes: McColgan’s performance in the Bruce Cup in 2020 was inspired. His game has gone through a transformation in 2021 and with-it greater consistency. Distance may be his limiting factor but if he can play consistently, it might be a barrier he can easily push through.
