The RyDov Cup is the longest running event on the EuroDov Tour and whilst the final result is the number we all focus on, the tournament has an array of storylines and numbers that lie behind it.
Each year we unleash EuroDov Reporter on the history books to bring you the RyDov Cup – by the numbers; so, sit back and enjoy the story of the RyDov Cup.
The 2024 result of 13.5 – 10.5 is the fourth time the RyDov cup has been won by 3 points and it is only the 5th largest margin of victory with the largest win coming in 2022 when Team Brannan beat Team Allan 16.5 – 7.5.
The morning result 9.5-2.5 was the largest every numerical difference between the two teams at lunch – you’d have to go back to the 4th playing of the RyDov Cup to get close to a 7-point lead and that was when Team hedges led Team Hardie by 6 at lunch.
Looking at the percentage of points won in the morning session, Team Gowens 9.5 points represented 79% of all points on offer, that is only bettered by the aforementioned Team Hedges who won 87% of the points on offer.
Team Gowens won the final match in the morning session and became the 7th team to win the RyDov Cup when they won the final singles match of the morning session.
The afternoon session saw Team Love win out 8-4 but the lead was so great from the morning session that Team Gowens held on to victory – they go down in the history books as the first team to lead in the morning, lose the afternoon session but still win the RyDov Cup.
Let’s look at individual players now. To be included in this section players must play a minimum of 3 RyDov Cups, (rtd) denotes a player who has retired from playing the RyDov Cup.
The RyDov Cup has featured 47 different players in 10 years.
Stuart Sutherland and David McColgan continued to make history as the only two players to play in every RyDov Cup, taking their appearances in the tournament to 10. Denis Duncan, John Hedges and Stephen Hedges are one behind on 9 with Andy Love and Kevin Brannan on 8.
McColgan has featured in the most winning teams with a total of 8, with Brannan (7) and Sutherland (6) just behind him.
David Hutcheson (rtd), with 4 appearances, has been on the winning side every time he played, and Paul Gowens has won 3 from 3 to be the leading active player. Kevin Brannan sits on 88% and David McColgan on 80%.
Looking at total points, David McColgan and Stuart Sutherland are tied at the top with 16.5 points with Allan Kinnear close behind on 15.5, Daniel Peck sits third on 13.
Looking at percentage points won Richard Mair sits top of the leader board now with 100% points won in 3 appearances. Behind him Allan Kinnear boasts an 86%-win rate from 6 appearances and Graeme Connor, Scott Hamilton (rtd) and Graeme Rose on 67%.
When it comes to singles points, Stuart Sutherland leads the way on 6.5 points with Andy Love (6) and Denis Duncan (5) just behind him. When comparing percentage of points won Richard Mair and Paul Gowens boast a 100%-win rate, Andy Love and David Hutcheson (75%), Graeme Connor, Barry Cunningham and Graeme Rose (67%) are just behind them.
Moving to the afternoon sessions, Allan Kinnear, David McColgan and Daniel Peck find themselves all tied on 12 with Sutherland (10), Hedges Snr. (9) and Connor and Cunningham (6) behind them.
Looking at percentage win rate Allan Kinnear boasts a 100% record over 6 appearances, so too does Richard Mair after 3. Daniel Peck (86%), Scott Hamilton (rtd) (75%) and Marcus McCran (rtd) (70%) sit just behind them.
